Synopsis:
The third book in the Crescent City series picks up where the second one ended. With Bryce transporting to a different realm and Hunt and Ruhn are being held captive by the Asteri. The question is, how will they survive?
Review:
Out of all of Sarah J. Maas’ books, this was not a favorite of mine. Her first two books in this series were incredible. She took her time building this fantasy world that still included modern-day technology and advancement. The characters had so much depth and room to grow. It was truly a feat that only Maas could accomplish.
Because of those first two books, is why this book still gets 4 stars from me, but it is far away from being a 5 star read.
I felt like the entire story was rushed. There were so many moving pieces that needed to be tied together that we got lost along the way. One of the main reasons it seemed this way is because there were too many character POVs in this book. Ithan and Tharion’s chapters rarely fed into the main plot of the book, other than for a few moments. For the most part, they seemed like filler chapters, which I much rather would have loved to read something else.
However, with that said and done, I still loved my main characters of Bryce, Hunt. Ruhn, and Lidia. Bryce is such a badass, and I love her quick quips and comebacks for any situation. She did disappoint me with her ability to understand what Hunt was going through, but I understood as a story, we couldn’t fully focus on that.
My boy Hunt has been through the ringer. I can’t believe he has kept it together as long as he has! I love that no matter what he goes through, he is always there for Bryce and ready to support her plans, even when he disagrees.
Ruhn and Lidia made this book for me. They are two strong characters that come together and light up the entire book. Thank you, Maas, for giving us that.
House of Flame and Shadow may not have been my favorite book in the Crescent City series, but it still was able to produce an incredible story. Maas was still able to capture me and bring me to another world with her writing. For that, I would like to say ‘thank you’. There was plenty of action to keep this book flowing.
Recommendation:
I would absolutely recommend this book. Just because someone doesn’t give a book 5 stars or doesn’t like it as much as another doesn’t mean someone will have a different opinion. Personally, I love seeing others’ opinions and discussing them, so please feel free to reach out on Instagram or leave a message on this post to discuss!
