Review:

What I love about reading is that everyone’s opinion defers. Something I might really enjoy, some other reader may not. I bring this up because in this book, there were some plot points and conflicts that I feel like were not dealt with in a way that I, as a reader, prefer. This didn’t affect how good I found the story and book overall, but it is still worth mentioning!

With that being said, I did very much enjoy this book. Ali Hazelwood’s characters are my favorite. The FMC, Misery, is strong-willed, and she doesn’t let anyone mess with her. There is nothing I enjoy more in a book than when the main character can hold her own. I also like the fact that she is extremely inexperienced in all aspects of life, except for staying alive. She doesn’t let that inexperience rule her. She knows who she is but is willing to grow and learn from the experiences that are new to her.

Lowe embodies everything I love in an MMC. He is protective of his pack, his wife, and his family. He puts everyone before himself but never complains. It is very refreshing to have him not treat Misery like crap when he doesn’t want her to know his feelings like so many other MMCs do. Plus, he values her freedom of choice so much that he is willing to live a life without her if she so chooses. I respect the hell out of that!

With all that I loved about this book, I felt it was missing a few things. Those “things” were the action scenes I so desperately wanted. Throughout the story, it was brought up how Misery has been targeted and attacked by Vampyres and Humans alike and how she has learned to survive all these years. However, once she joined the Weres, we rarely saw this survival. All of a sudden, Misery was safe, and only one person threatened her until the end of the book. I definitely would have liked to see her holding her own out there and maybe some more protectiveness from Lowe trying to save her.

On top of that, the final battle was a ‘fade to black’ moment that I was looking forward to the entire book. For some readers, they wouldn’t mind this, but personally, I love the action scenes and hearing all the gritty details! This was by no means a deal breaker for me, but it was something I wished for in the book, and it would have made it a 5 star read for me if it was.

Overall, I very much enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and the beautiful relationship built between the two leads. It was wholesome and built on mutual trust. The writing was wonderful, and I very much want to read more about this world Hazelwood has created!
